This ‘wall chart’ of pills and pharmaceutical products was originally produced for the Pharmacy restaurant in London in 1997 and was re-made in 2004.

Silver Pharmacy Wallpaper is an original offset realized by Damien Hirst in 1997. This contemporary offset represents a panel of pharmacy showing the Pharmaceutical names of pills and products and describing them with their pharmaceutical titles. This artwork was designed by Damien Hirst on the occasion of the opening of his restaurant "The Pharmacy" at Notting Hill Gate, London. The interior was entirely designed by the artist and included many Hirst artworks. Pharmacy restaurant was awarded the prize for the best-designed restaurant from the Carlton London Restaurant Award in 1998. The restaurant becomes very famous for served pharmaceutically-inspired food and drinks and for the dispute with a Britain pharmaceutical company of due to the names on the pill bottles and medical items. For this reason, the wallpaper was removed and replaced without names. So on the market remained only a few pieces of the original wallpaper named and today have become real collector's pieces! Not signed nor numbered.

Produced for his restaurant called The Pharmacy located at Notting Hill Gate, London, Hirst designed wallpaper (the "wall chart") based on the pharmaceutical giant Merck’s handbook endpapers, showing pills and products and describing them with their pharmaceutical titles. Merck objected and he withdrew it as an artwork of wallpaper, after he had already plastered the restaurant with silver and gold sheets of the material. Initial plans to open further restaurants outside London were quietly dropped and the restaurant itself closed in September, 2003. For the massive Pharmacy sale at Sotheby’s in 2004, though, new wallpaper was designed using biblical titles and references to biblical passages.

This roll
is one of the original 1st edition rolls with the pharmaceutical names printed as used in Hirst's Pharmacy Restaurant. This is from the 1997 edition which has long since sold out making these rolls very rare. The majority of these early edition pharmacy rolls have been cut down into small panels & it is not very often a full sealed roll becomes available. Coulour id Gold/Bronze.

Original rare first edition 5 colour Gravure print by Damien Hirst.

This ‘wall chart’ of pills and pharmaceutical products was producedby Hirst for the famous 'Pharmacy Restaurant' in London in 1997.

The piece measures 54 cm x 46 cm and is in perfect condition. This first edition print contains the actual pharmaceutical names of each product, which meant Hirst and the pharmacy restaurant were forced to destroy all remaining rolls at risk of being sued by pharmaceutical giant Merck, making it a rare item.

In 2004 Hirst redesigned the wallpaper, adding biblical titles and references to biblical passages to avoid copyright issues. This second edition of 1000 rolls was in screenprint / serigraph form and is not to be confused with the much rarer first edition in 5 colour Gravure form for which you are bidding on.
